Boxing is considered to be the most elegant, fair and unbiased sport, which is based on a set of well-defined rules and regulations. It is a sport that tests the physical, tactical and mental acumen of a boxer against his/her opponent. However, boxing matches become controversial when judges declare the winner wrong or give a biased decision. In most cases, judges are unbiased, but in a few instances, they have given the win to the wrong fighter. In this blog, I will discuss ten examples of fights, in which boxing judges gave the win to the wrong fighter.
Exhibit A: Gennady Golovkin vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (September 16th, 2017)
The first example of a fight in which judges gave the win to the wrong fighter is the Gennady Golovkin vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight. This fight took place on September 16th, 2017, and it was for the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, and The Ring middleweight titles. The fight was declared as a draw, but most boxing experts feel that Golovkin won the fight easily. The judges who were responsible for this decision, Adalaide Byrd, Don Trella, and Dave Moretti, were heavily ridiculed for their decision.
Exhibit B: Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley (June 9th, 2012)
The second example of a fight in which judges gave the win to the wrong fighter is the Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley fight. This fight took place on June 9th, 2012, and it was for the WBO welterweight title. Pacquiao was the defending champion and was heavily favored to win the fight, but the judges ruled in favor of Bradley in a highly controversial decision. The judges who were responsible for this decision, Jerry Roth, CJ Ross, and Duane Ford, were heavily criticized, and many people with eyes believed that Pacquiao was the rightful winner.
Exhibit C: Andre Ward vs. Sergey Kovalev (November 19th, 2016)
The third example of a fight in which judges gave the win to the wrong fighter is the Andre Ward vs. Sergey Kovalev fight. This fight took place on November 19th, 2016, and it was for the unified WBA, WBO, IBF, and The Ring light heavyweight titles. The fight was highly competitive, and many experts believed that Kovalev had won the fight. However, the judges ruled in favor of Ward in a highly controversial decision. The judges who were responsible for this decision, Burt Clements, John McKaie, and Glenn Trowbridge, were the jackasses here.
Exhibit D: Oscar De La Hoya vs. Felix Trinidad (September 18th, 1999)
The fourth example of a fight in which judges gave the win to the wrong fighter is the Oscar De La Hoya vs. Felix Trinidad fight. This fight took place on September 18th, 1999, and it was for the WBC and IBF welterweight titles. The fight was highly competitive, and many experts believed that De La Hoya had won the fight. However, the judges ruled in favor of Trinidad in a highly controversial decision. The judges who were responsible for this decision, Bob Logist, Dave Moretti, and Jerry Roth, were criticized for their decision.
Exhibit E: Lennox Lewis vs. Evander Holyfield (March 13th, 1999)
The fifth example of a fight in which judges gave the win to the wrong fighter is the Lennox Lewis vs. Evander Holyfield fight. This fight took place on March 13th, 1999, and it was for the WBC, IBF, and The Ring heavyweight titles. The fight was highly competitive, and many experts believed that Lewis had won the fight. However, the judges declared the fight a draw, which was a highly controversial decision. The judges who were responsible for this decision, Eugenia Williams, Stanley Christodoulou, and Larry O’Connell, were to blame for the decision.
Exhibit F: Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez (November 12th, 2011)
The sixth example of a fight in which judges gave the win to the wrong fighter is the Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez fight. This fight took place on November 12th, 2011, and it was for the WBO welterweight title. The fight was highly competitive, and many experts believed that Marquez had won the fight. However, the judges declared the fight in favor of Pacquiao in a highly controversial decision. The judges who were responsible for this decision, Glenn Trowbridge, Dave Moretti, and Robert Hoyle, were the blind overseers on this night.
